How does an artist get their song on the radio?

If your song is played on a radio, it means the song is going to get more commercial success. It means that the song needs to be catchy but it needs to be what they call ‘Radio-Friendly’ so that a label can then market the single. Normally, they would hire a song writer or producer who is well known so they can ensure that at least one of the songs can be used on the radio.  Focus groups take place so that they can decide on what song is going to get them success. The label then pushes the song into the hands of the radio stations which are well known like Kiss and Heart. If they can’t get it into the big stations they decide to go to the local stations and then it is up to the audience how often the song is played or whether the song is never heard of again.

When it comes to the radio stations that are national radio conglomerates they use a different approach. To do this they would have focus groups and television polls which can determine if it gets played on loads of different stations. It is very common that a conglomerate would test a song in a certain market before adding to the list of songs they are going to play.

How are music videos are made?

Music videos are generally made when they have recorded a single for the artist to bring out. They then call in all the people they need to do the music video. This is normally directors, producers, the artist. They will need to work out what type of music video they are going to do and how long it will take to shoot the music video. They will also work out the storyboard and the shoots that they want to use in the video.

In music videos they tend to mime so it means that the editing team will spend some time matching up the lip syncing and they will add any effects they think that they need. Once it is done the music video should be ready for release. They tend put the music video on channels like MTV and smash hits so they will get a large audience and see if it appeals to the people.
