Pre-production

Research into the music industry

The first thing to do is to choose a production company which you can’t rust to make a good music video. The artist will choose a well-known company because if they went to someone who is not recognised then the audience will feel like the artist is not serious.

It will need to attract the audience so it will need to be good quality. For this to happen it means that you need to decide on the people you want to have as the crew. They need to start planning and if necessary building the set. This is the stage where they need to storyboard the ideas for the video. They need it to be perfect so it could take several months for the company and the artist to decide what idea is right.

Production

More people will be hired as crew and if necessary back-up dancers and once everything is in place the filming starts to happen. They take loads of shots so if one shot does not look right then they have back-ups. They will also take still shots of the artist. This is important because if one part does not look right then the whole video won’t look right. They will try and stick to the storyboard however on set there might be a better idea so they choose that instead. They have to make sure that it fits into the rest of the music video.

Post-Production

This is where the music video is put together and this will take weeks as they need to make sure that everything looks right and the lip syncing is on point. The music video will then be duplicated many times ready for different formats and it is also ready for distribution. They might use parts of the video for advertising as well as the stills being used for posters and digipaks.
